‌Nitrocellulose‌, scientific name cellulose nitrate, commonly known as nitrocellulose or nitrocellulose, is a white or slightly yellow fibrous polymer obtained by the esterification reaction of cellulose and nitric acid. It is usually made from cotton fiber as raw material, through the esterification reaction of refined short cotton lint with a mixed acid of nitric acid and sulfuric acid.‌
