Dimethylformamide (DMF) is a colorless transparent high boiling point liquid with a light amine flavor. It is miscible with water and most organic solvents. It is a common solvent for chemical reactions. Pure dimethylformamide has no smell, but industrial grade or deteriorated dimethylformamide has fishy smell. Dimethylformamide is a good nonprotic polar solvent.

It is mainly used in polyurethane, acrylic fiber, medicine, pesticide, dye, electronics and other industries. In the polyurethane industry, it is used as a washing and curing agent, mainly used in the production of wet synthetic leather; in the pharmaceutical industry, it is used as a synthetic drug intermediate, widely used in the production of doxycycline, cortisone, and sulfonamide drugs; in the acrylic fiber industry, it is used as a solvent, mainly used in the dry spinning production of acrylic fiber; in the pesticide industry, it is used to synthesize high-efficiency and low-toxic pesticides; in the dye industry, it is used as a dye solvent; in the electronics industry, it is used as a quenching agent for tinned parts and cleaning of circuit boards; in other industries, it includes carriers of dangerous gases, solvents for drug crystallization, adhesives, etc.
