Melamine, commonly known as melamine and protein essence, has a molecular formula of C3H6N6 and is named "1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamine" by IUPAC. Melamine is an important nitrogen heterocyclic organic chemical raw material, mainly used as the main raw material for manufacturing melamine formaldehyde resin (MF), an organic element analysis reagent, and also used in the synthesis of organic and resin as a tanning and filling agent for leather processing. It is also used in industries such as wood, plastics, coatings, papermaking, textiles, leather, electrical, pharmaceutical, etc. It can also be used as a flame retardant, formaldehyde cleaner, fertilizer, etc.

Melamine is the most commonly used gas source for intumescent flame retardants, as well as the raw material for preparing many intumescent flame retardant components (such as various phosphates, cyanuric acid salts, phosphates). It is also often compounded with other flame retardants to retard a variety of plastics and other polymers, such as the combination with organic phosphate esters to retard polyurethane foam.
